Luca's Cleft Story

When my husband, Zeb, and I started trying to have kids, we consulted with a genetics specialist. Zeb has an isolated cleft, meaning he was simply 1 in 700 as the statistic goes; nobody else in his family had one. They said our chances of having a child with a cleft was only 4%. Our daughter was born without a cleft and we nearly let down our guard when I got pregnant with Luca 2 years later. We went in for my 20-week ultrasound and were elated to find out that he was going to be a boy... and then the tech went quiet. We knew. Even being somewhat prepared with the possibility, we had a period of worry/grief surrounding the diagnosis. After some time, though, we felt lucky to have that time ahead of Luca’s birth so we could get the worry behind us and welcome him with a world of love and excitement. When I held him for the first time, I looked into his big, brown eyes and knew he would change the world... and be a force. Just like his daddy.

As far as genetics are concerned, our kids now have an 8% chance of having a baby with a cleft, but a 100% chance of being kinder, more accepting people who celebrate individuality. For that, we are grateful.
